UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, welcomes a €1 million humanitarian grant from the European Union (EU) through its Humanitarian Aid Operations. This funding will support thousands of refugees and asylum seekers in Yemen, providing them with essential legal protection, documentation, and support.

Yemen is home to over 60,000 refugees and asylum seekers, primarily from Somalia, Ethiopia, Syria, Eritrea, Iraq, Sudan, and Palestine. The ongoing conflict and economic hardship have left many without documentation, legal assistance, or basic services – exposing them to heightened risks of poverty exclusion and insecurity.

• Thanks to EU’s support UNHCR and partners will deliver Legal identity and documentation to help refugees and asylum seekers access education, healthcare, and other essential services, and to move safely within Yemen.

Legal aid and birth registration for at least 2,500 refugees and asylum seekers, addressing issues like tenancy disputes, detention, and lack of civil documentation for children.

“The EU’s support allows us to reach those most in need, offering legal protection and helping families obtain the documents that open the door to rights and services,” said Marin Kajdomcaj, UNHCR Representative in Yemen.

“As many vulnerable groups in Yemen face unprecedented challenges due to the ongoing crisis, protection remains vital. The EU's humanitarian funding enables UNHCR to provide crucial services that uphold dignity and rights in the face of hardship” said Muriel Cornelis, Head of the EU Humanitarian Aid Office in Yemen.

Despite significant challenges, UNHCR and partners are working with authorities and communities to ensure that refugees and asylum seekers are not left behind.
