The governorates of Aden, Lahj, Abyan, Shabwah, Marib, Taiz, Al-Dhale’, Hadhramaut, and the West Coast are currently experiencing a complex humanitarian crisis characterized by significant protection risks, according to the latest Overview of Protection Risks published by The Global Protection Cluster (GPC).
These challenges stem from ongoing conflict, natural disasters, economic instability, local currency devaluation, and limited access to essential services. Protection risks include issues related to housing, land, and property (HLP), as well as threats from fire incidents, unexploded ordnance (UXOs), and explosive remnants of war (ERW). Coordinated efforts are essential to strengthen protection response mechanisms, enhance early warning syst ems, and address the root causes of the crisis, thereby ensuring the safety and well-being of affected populations across the Aden hub. The report authors recommended that it is important to:
1. Enhance Comprehensive Victim Assistance by expanding assistance programs for both adults and children, including mine risk education initiatives.
2. Expand Housing, land, and property Services by providing services to undeserved areas in Marib, Aden, and the West Coast and continue offering legal mediation and cash assistance to families at risk of eviction.
3. Limit the Impact of Fire Incidents by launching fire safety awareness campaigns and provide training for Internally Displaced People (IDPs) on fire prevention and emergency response. Equip IDP sites with firefighting tools, such as fire extinguishers and safety kits. Advocate for the inclusion of protection partners in the districts of Hajjah Governorate under IRG control.
The report concluded that these narrative highlights summarize response activities in the Aden hub, identifying existing capacities and gaps in the protection framework. They focus on the West Coast, Marib, At Turba, and Hadramout sub-hubs, outlining specific protection risks for displaced populations. The recommendations aim to guide stakeholders in addressing these gaps and improving access to essential services for vulnerable groups.
