Heavy rains since August 19, 2025, have caused severe flooding in several areas in Yemen, including in Aden, Sanaa, Hodiedad and Hajjah, killing several people and caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure.

Further rainfall, according to experts,  is expected in the coming days, increasing the risk of flooding in areas already affected.

Transportation, power distribution and drinking water supply are severely disrupted. Locals and visitors of affected areas have been advised to stay away from flooded areas, valleys and streams, and to monitor local news and weather reports.

Experts believe that Climate change is affecting Yemen. Extreme and unusual weather events are becoming more frequent and may affect people’s travel plans. They also say that the monsoon season extends from April to September and seasonal flooding can slow down overland travel and reduce the delivery of essential services.

Recent reports found that Yemen has been facing drought in recent years, leading to crop failure and severe food shortages. During the rainy season, torrential rains and heavy flooding occur regularly, especially in mountainous areas. Flooding often results in landslides that can hamper overland travel and reduce the provision of essential services.
